Information for instructors

The MINTFIT math test is a project intended to provide support to prospective and new students at the higher education institutions in Hamburg and is sponsored by the BWFG (Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung [Ministry of Science, Research, and Equalities]).

With this test, prospective students should be able to independently determine in advance whether or not their math skills are at a level appropriate for the mathematics courses offered in the first semester of a STEM degree program.

In the first few semesters, the drop-out rate in the STEM subjects is particularly high. This has a large number of reasons — for example, it has been proven again and again that students do not have a firm enough grasp of the basics of mathematics or are not able to remember them quickly enough.

The first-semester mathematics courses at the higher education institutions HafenCity University Hamburg, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), and Universität Hamburg assume that students will have at least the minimum requirements for math as set out by COSH (Cooperation between schools and higher education institutions) in Baden-Württemberg in July 2014. These minimum requirements were jointly developed by teachers from schools and vocational colleges, and university teaching staff in a process that lasted ten years. As with the Hamburg universities, many universities and higher education institutions throughout Germany hold to these minimum requirements.

The MINTFIT math test was tested extensively in the first half of 2015. As a result of this continuous process, a test was developed that has been assessed by educators and many volunteer test-takers from the target group. We plan to continually develop and expand the test.

If you are interested in having one of our teams visit your educational institution to give an overview of the test or help your class take the test, please send us an email at kontakt (at) mintfit.hamburg. We would also welcome the opportunity to present the MINTFIT math test at vocational orientation days. Simply get in touch with us — we are happy that you are interested in the MINTFIT math test.
